Nairobi is Africa’s 4th largest city and is a vibrant and exciting place to be. There are some fascinating attractions: its cafe culture, unbridled nightlife, the National Museum, the Karen Blixen Museum and most notably, just 20 minutes from the city centre, wild lions and buffalo roam in the world’s only urban game reserve. Make sure you pay a visit to the elephant orphanage operated by the David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust for a once in a lifetime experience.

Day 2-5 Olonana Lodge, Masai Mara

Masai Mara

The Masai Mara together with Tanzania’s Serengeti form Africa’s most famous wildlife park, the Masai Mara National Reserve. The image of acacia trees dotting endless grass plains epitomises Africa for many, then add a Maasai warrior and some cattle to the picture and the conversation need go no further. The undeniable highlight of the Masai Mara National Reserve is undoubtedly the annual wildebeest migration traversing the vast plains of the Serengeti and the Masai Mara. It is known as the largest mass movement of land mammals on the planet – with more than a million animals following the rains. Large prides of lions, herds of elephants, as well as giraffes, gazelles and eland can also be spotted in the reserve. Aside from horse riding safaris and traditional vehicle safaris, hot-air ballooning over the Mara plains has become almost essential.

Day Itinerary

Start your day with a prompt pick-up at 9:00 AM. Your driver will transfer you to Wilson Airport for your scheduled flight to the Masai Mara (ETD 10:00 AM, ETA 11:00 AM).

Upon arrival in the Mara, you’ll be met by your private guide and transferred to the luxurious Sanctuary Olonana.

Spend the next three nights immersed in the beauty of the Masai Mara. Enjoy game drives, explore the vast plains, and witness the incredible wildlife this renowned ecosystem offers.

Don’t miss the opportunity to experience the magic of a hot air balloon safari! As the sun rises, soar above the savanna and witness the breathtaking panorama of the Mara from a unique perspective. This unforgettable experience will culminate in a celebratory champagne breakfast amidst the stunning scenery.

Overnight : Olonana Lodge

Olonana Lodge is a hideaway of rare elegance and serenity, in a prime position on a private stretch of the Mara River – the very spot where Sanctuary began, a quarter of a century ago, in 1999.

Connoisseurs of the Maasai Mara – that vast, gorgeous expanse of wilderness in southwestern Kenya, at the border with Tanzania – know that its character changes subtly from one nook to the next. Olonana occupies a covetable position just north on the famous Mara Triangle, at the edge of the National Reserve – a marvellously secluded and leafy spot, between looming escarpment and fast-flowing river. Here the “Sanctuary” label seems especially apt. Yet all around, the ceaseless pageant of wildlife and wonder rolls on.

Suites

Olonana’s 14 exceptional suites, at least 130 sqm in size, flaunt clean lines and organic materials, and are so comfortable that guests would be forgiven for being tempted to stay in. Floor-to-ceiling glass doors fold open to reveal magnificent Mara River views and the interiors have been sensitively and tastefully finished with elegant nature-inspired furnishings; this creates an ever-present sense of being connected to the great outdoors. Sumptuous king-sized beds, with overhead fans, and a daybed on the deck invite you to relax inside or out, while the sprawling lower lounge area offers panoramic views of the surrounding landscape. The unfaltering attention to detail extends to fully stocked mini-fridges, specially commissioned African art and glamorous ensuites. These refined marble- and slate-accented bathrooms have a generous tub, double vanity and a rain shower.

The landscape is characterised by vast stretches of savannah interspersed with acacia trees and riverine woodlands. Wildlife can be seen along the banks of the Mara River and visitors can view the annual spectacle of the half a million migrating wildebeest. The name Tanzania conjures up images of wildebeest stampeding across vast savannah, rain forests teeming with monkeys and birdlife, and great plains brimming with legions of game. All of these natural wonders and more are on offer in this exceptionally diverse African nation. Visitors typically visit Tanzania to partake in at least one of the four well-known Tanzanian tourist experiences: a relaxing seaside vacation on the picturesque island paradise of Zanzibar, an underwater tour of some of the world’s most renowned dive sites around the gorgeous Spice Islands, a safari adventure in some of Africa’s most impressive game reserves, or a hiking excursion around Mount Kilimanjaro National Park. Whichever of these incredible holidays you choose, you will undoubtedly be welcomed by some fabulously friendly and peaceful inhabitants who, despite being divided into 120 different ethnic groups and cultures, live in harmony with one another and provide some of the most wonderfully exotic local cuisine you could imagine.
